The exotic beauty of the Hungarian puszta, while beautifully described in Stifter’s text, is hard to visualize for readers who have never experienced its unique landscape directly. He is given a tour of the estate, the gardens, the stables, and introduced to a woman who runs a neighboring estate. But they know nothing of death.
