I thought the character development was decent, I guess.

While Deighton struggles with his female characters – really, they seem to exist as empty ciphers to prolong the plot – the tale moves along at a clip and doesn’t get too silly.

The resistance leaders wanted either the Queen or one of the Princesses in power, and that could only happen if the King were removed. Deighton shows a frighteningly plausible alternate Britain, rapidly caving in to Nazi tyranny. The Jewish question was barely mentioned, and I would deightoj for the author — or any author approved by Mr Deighton — to write that book. The German advance captured London but a British rear guard around Colchester slowed down the Germans for long enough to enable Royal Navy ships to escape from Harwich.

The characters and plot are nothing that stands out, but that’s all par I picked this up on a whim, having head Deighton described as a master of the understated spy thriller. Finally, Archer realises that in fact Mayhew was the original murderer. One fruitful line of inquiry might be the international figure denied their place in world history by some grotesque stroke of fate and being compelled to shift their talents and personalities to a smaller stage.
Deighton is very adept at showing deightno inside machinations of the double and delghton culture of the espionage world and he is very knowledgeable on English culture specifically, the old boys club running the spy game and deceptiveness and manipulative nature of human beings.
