The Dosadi Experiment by Frank Herbert

Although the former is referenced through the latter, my understanding of the latter was not harmed in any way I can imagine. The resultant survivor guilt is a critical element of Gowachin psychology and sociology.

They still want a miracle from him. Despite some very nice touches, and the illumination it provides for the Dune trilogy, The Jesus Incident is not up to the standard of Herbert’s best work.

I did not quite ‘get’ the concept of how it all worked. The genie is out of the bottle, cryptologically. I’m not sure that it matters with this book, but there were a few reveals in the denoument that I’m questioning. Can this be considered a stand-alone work or would you recommend reading ‘Whipping Star’ before ‘The Dosadi Experiment’?

If you really encompassed it it would destroy you. Weighing a pig doesn’t fatten it. The philosophical foundation of this novel boils down to simple social Darwinism. And… while such an awareness might be “aware of the fall of every sparrow,” so to speak, it might not be concerned with it.

The Dune saga, set in the distant future and taking place over millennia, dealt with themes such as human survival and evolution, ecology, and the intersection of religion, politics, and power, and is widely considered to be among the classics in the field of science fiction. The experiment has gone on secretly for decades, with the fear that this experiment is strictly illegal under the terms of intergalactic treaties of dozens of species.

The actual sabotage efforts of the Bureau are not the primary subject of the stories, however, except in “The Tactful Saboteur. Some of them are interesting, and some of them are bland and chewy. And it is true, that I have not yet read the Dune series, I have tried a few early short stories and the later novel “White Plague” and had to give up on those – just did not grab me!


The basic plot involves a secret experiment in which a group of humans and aliens are kidnapped and placed on a planet with a brutal environment in order to produce All the same, there is a strong parrallelism in the climactic scenes of both books, with Paul besting Feyd-Rautha in single combat and McKie entering the Gowachin Courtarena to settle the matter of Dosadi according to the peculiarities of Gowachin justice.

It’s not so much that this book was bad, as that it was incredibly boring. Therefore, though it may be true that on some deep level, “the universe has no center capable of noticing us,” and that even a being “aware of the fall of every sparrow” might not be concerned about it, there is compassion and love in the universe, human love. This is the lesson of Avata: McKie is assigned to the case when the giant metal “beachballs,” the only means of communication with the Calebans, begin to disappear, followed by death or insanity for all those who had used jump-doors.

I really enjoyed the story but the motivation of the main character was a little unclear to me.

Here Herbert is focusing on the negative aspects of such an interaction, but his statements may be turned around to give an understanding of his “sense of hierarchical intelligence in the universe.
