The Dosadi Experiment by Frank Herbert
He is described as a squat and ugly man of Pacific Islander ancestry, with green eyes and a shock of red hair. Although the former is referenced through the latter, my understanding of the latter was not harmed in any way I can imagine. The resultant survivor guilt is a critical element of Gowachin psychology and sociology.
Then there is the intriguing Gowachin legal system.

Gowachin laws do not proliferate; each new decision replaces all precedents. The cover of the edition I read had a synopsis that had only a slight similarity to the actual content of the book. To find out more, including how to control cookies, see here: In the face of overwhelming consciousness, the body, with its links to the species-past, is the rock on which we can found identity, the anchor that will allow us to ascend to a primal sense of enormity and at-one-ness with the universe, and yet remain human and alive.
Why were they so silent? The entire experience is going to be instant replay. Okay, so life is hard. The same point is made in The Jesus Incident: Want to Contribute an Item? That he was married many, many times. Other books in the series. It was fascinating following McKie having to get up to speed very quickly to be able to survive alongside the hardship-hardened Dosadi, becoming more Dosadi than the Dosadi, and his relationship with Keila Jedrik.
They still want a miracle from him. Despite some very nice touches, and the illumination it provides for the Dune trilogy, The Jesus Incident is not up to the standard of Herbert’s best work.
I did not quite ‘get’ the concept of how it all worked. The genie is out of the bottle, cryptologically. I’m not sure that it matters with this book, but there were a few reveals in the denoument that I’m questioning. Can this be considered a stand-alone work or would you recommend reading ‘Whipping Star’ before ‘The Dosadi Experiment’?
If you really encompassed it it would destroy you. Weighing a pig doesn’t fatten it. The philosophical foundation of this novel boils down to simple social Darwinism. And… while such an awareness might be “aware of the fall of every sparrow,” so to speak, it might not be concerned with it.

The Dune saga, set in the distant future and taking place over millennia, dealt with themes such as human survival and evolution, ecology, and the intersection of religion, politics, and power, and is widely considered to be among the classics in the field of science fiction. The experiment has gone on secretly for decades, with the fear that this experiment is strictly illegal under the terms of intergalactic treaties of dozens of species.
The actual sabotage efforts of the Bureau are not the primary subject of the stories, however, except in “The Tactful Saboteur. Some of them are interesting, and some of them are bland and chewy. He himself is not the solution to the problem, but as the living visibility of all the contradictions in the old pattern, he points the way to a new one in which humans will have given up the single vision of the good and its inevitable dark companion. And it is true, that I have not yet read the Dune series, I have tried a few early short stories and the later novel “White Plague” and had to give up on those – just did not grab me!
The basic plot involves a secret experiment in which a group of humans and aliens are kidnapped and placed on a planet with a brutal environment in order to produce All the same, there is a strong parrallelism in the climactic scenes of both books, with Paul besting Feyd-Rautha in single combat and McKie entering the Gowachin Courtarena to settle the matter of Dosadi according to the peculiarities of Gowachin justice.
It’s not so much that this book was bad, as that it was incredibly boring. Therefore, though it may be true that on some deep level, “the universe has no center capable of noticing us,” and that even a being “aware of the fall of every sparrow” might not be concerned about it, there is compassion and love in the universe, human love. This is the lesson of Avata: McKie is assigned to the case when the giant metal “beachballs,” the only means of communication with the Calebans, begin to disappear, followed by death or insanity for all those who had used jump-doors.
I really enjoyed the story but the motivation of the main character was a little unclear to me.
Here Herbert is focusing on the negative aspects of such an interaction, but his statements may be turned around to give an understanding of his “sense of hierarchical intelligence in the universe. It has sent one woman back to view the crucifixion. The difference between McKie and Herbert’s other hyperperceptive heroes is that McKie could never be mistaken for a messiah, dosavi perhaps by the froglike Gowachin. And they have a plan to get out. As his wisdom deepens, and he approaches a kind of totality, he says, I thhe I tried to invent life, not realizing it’d already been invented,” and shortly before the end of his vision, he wanted to turn to the aides massed in the sietch ehrbert, shout at them:
