I think Asaro’s SF is more edgy and better than her fantasy, but her fantasties are also good, enjoyable reads in well developed world. This had me hooked from the beginning, although I didn’t realize that it’s the second in the series, I have to get the first one now.

This whole series just lacks art and style in its delivery. I stuck it out though, since I like her a lot.
The magic set up in this book is unique, and the character interaction is as well. His half-crazy mother and terror-inducing grandfather raised him, and hold much of the blame for his dark heart. Reviews and Ratings 4.

Re-reading is in order. He mjsted Cobalt’s father and the villain of The Charmed Sphere and while he is never a truly nice or likeable character, by the end of the book he is much more understandable – as is the fact that Cobalt is so desperate for his love and approval, which was a puzzle earlier in the story.
It does start off a bit slow, but then the marriage between Cobalt and Mel happens and it is impossible to put the book down.

The good people are generally Good with a capital G, and the bad ones are Evil. I can’t wait to read the third! I really enjoyed the shapes-and-colors based magic. I was especially intrigued by the way magic is used in battle.

The author attempts to soften him with teensy flashes of humor, and he is tender and gentle with Mel. To me, this is more a story about redemption.

Deposed kings, sword and sorcery, magic and spells, kings and queens, dark-hearted rulers and self-sacrificing princesses, all combine to make this story one of azaro best.
Sometimes the behavior of the characters seems calculated to create drama, rather than springing naturally from their backgrounds.
